Greek mythology

In Greek mythology, the Titans were a race of powerful deities who preceded the Olympian gods.

  • The first generation: These 12 immortal children of Uranus (the Sky) and Gaia (the Earth) originally ruled the cosmos.
    • Male Titans: Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Cronus.
    • Female Titans: Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, and Tethys.
  • The fall: The Titans, led by Cronus, overthrew their father Uranus. However, Cronus and most of the Titans were later defeated by Cronus’s own son, Zeus, and the younger Olympians in a great war called the Titanomachy. After their defeat, many were imprisoned in Tartarus, the deepest part of the underworld.
  • Legacy: Notable children of the Titans include Atlas, who was forced to hold up the sky, and Prometheus, who gave fire to humanity.
